It's only April! Yeah I know, but if you're like most parents you will procrastinate making arrangements to have your children in camps, STEM programs, or even childcare; then, the last day of school you will slap yourself in the head and start the summer childcare scramble! Don't do it to yourself. Start now and you will have a worry free summer. If you; wait a lot of camps will be filled up, and then you'll really be hurting.

Let's take a peek at your day: wake up (really early because you need to get ready and organize yourself before the kids get up), make sure the kid's clothes are ready to go. When you do that you have to go into their cluttered rooms and you make a mental note that you need to get it organized AGAIN. You then go to the kitchen to figure out breakfast and pack lunches/snacks for the kids, when you look in the pantry you find that you are so low on snacks that if you don't go to the store today the kids will have to share the last bag of goldfish tomorrow for lunch AND snacks; you might have more but you can't find them due to the state the pantry is in (note to self organize pantry this weekend along with soccer, gymnastics, taking the kids out for a play date). You wake up the kids with coffee in hand, and they clump to the kitchen, sit down and proceed to complain that you are out of their favorite cereal, and while the kids get all riled up they then spill their orange juice on their school clothes that they put on BEFORE breakfast which you don't like them to do, but choose your battles, you go back to their rooms only to find that drawers are in complete disarray, there are more clothes on the floor then in closets and drawers, you then make another note that you need to sort out clean laundry to dirty laundry because we all know that the clothes on the floor aren't all dirty but, you need to find a clean shirt now, and you're finding that impossible. This is only your morning. Needless to say the rest of the day is just a chain of events that keep you off balance, and not just today but nearly every day.
I'm an old fuddy duddy because when I was growing up spring break applied to college students, not me when I was in elementary school. Now kids of all school ages have spring break and I really don't know how parents do it. I mean don't parents still have to work all year round? What do you do with the kids? Do you go on a vacation? Do you arrange childcare? Does one parent take off of work? Being a parent is so much more complicated then it used to be.

That's a good question, and the answer is: a lot! Finding a babysitter on your own is a tricky endeavor, and even after you find a babysitter that you believe is the right one you may find out they are not, and then you have to start the process all over again...ugh!

As a childcare provider, and an older one at that, I've noticed a trend; parents aren't necessarily parenting anymore. Children have control of the household, and parents are jumping through hoops to make the children happy, and in return; teachers, babysitters, nannies, and other childcare givers are having a more and more difficult time making sure children are safe, not hurting others or each other, teaching, preparing meals etc. Families too are suffering the consequences by having a chaotic home.
I can't tell you how hard it is to find people that take babysitting seriously. During my time operating an agency that places babysitters for ongoing, permanent, or on-call positions I've heard and seen it all, and I'm still surprised at the laissez faire approach that people try to get away with when talking to me about why they want to babysit. If I were a parent I would want someone like me to take on the recruiting process. It is one of the worst parts of doing what I do. People don't show up for interviews, don't return your calls, show up late for interviews, come to an interview dressed inappropriately, and so many other things.
Believe it or not it is time to start getting in the mindset of going back-to-school. I know, crazy; it's only been a month or just over a month and it's time to think about the routine once again. There are a lot of things you can do now that will start your school year off organized, calm, and hopefully, easy to maintain. By setting up a system of keeping track of schedules, activities, chores, and academics you'll be able to feel better about the upcoming school year, and keep you on track.
